Three Steps To Take Care Of Your Basketball

Whether or not you are a basketball player, you will most probably get a ball if you are a big basketball fan. But this doesn't mean that just because you only have the ball for display purposes that it should not be maintained in a certain way.

Of course, not using the ball at all will give you the advantage of less maintenance. But the moment that you bounce that ball on the ground and use it in more and more games, the more maintenance it will need to keep it in top condition. Here are some things that you can do to make sure that your basketball is always in great shape for the next game.

• Wash the ball – Remember that a basketball does not clean itself. In fact, it is made of rubber or leather which means that it will pick up dirt pretty fast and this is especially true if you are using the ball in outdoor game sessions.

It really is a simple process; you just need to get a bucket of water to rinse the ball after each game. If you need to rub away any stubborn dirt or stains, you can do so with a cloth. The great thing about washing a ball with water is that it will also be able to inspect the ball for any holes that may have formed from overusing it.

• Keep it pumped up – Before and after a game, your basketball should be in the same condition. This means that even if you are not using it so much, make sure that you have it pumped up to its maximum. This will ensure that the rubber or leather is always stretched and in good condition so that cracks will not form.

Cracks can form if a ball is not pumped up because the rubber can fold into itself and once you pump it up again, those folds can stretch apart and form the cracks that will eventually form holes. Keep your ball pumped regardless of whether it is made of rubber or leather. Keeping the ball pumped will also allow it to bounce better with less effort, which means that you don't have to push it harder on the ground which can damage the surface of the ball.

• Store it properly – When you are not using a basketball, make sure that you are not storing it in a place that is too hot or too humid. The room that you store your basketball in should be at room temperature which means it shouldn't be too cold or damp either. This will ensure that your ball does not gather any mold in the dark and damp. On the other hand, it will also not warp out of shape if kept in extreme heat. You will be amazed how long your ball will last just by storing it in the proper place and not just in a dark closet for long periods of time.
