Six Basic Basketball Skills

You won't be a successful basketball player without the fundamental basketball skills. Here are the basic basketball skills you should learn and master.

1. Dribbling. Can you imagine playing basketball without dribbling? Of course not. If you watch a basketball game intently, you will notice that all players know how to dribble.

Dribbling is an important skill because you will need this to be able to move around the court with the ball. If you move around without dribbling, a travelling violation will be called on you; however, do not overdo dribbling because if you dribble too much you are increasing the chances of the other player stealing your ball.

You must know that dribbling is more than bouncing the ball back and forth. To successfully dribble your way, you will have to master the basics like the proper positioning of the hand, learning how to dribble while walking and dribbling while running. Once you master the basics, you are now ready to learn more advanced dribbling skills.

2. Shooting. This is another important skill that you should master. Shooting is important because in order to score points you will have to successfully shoot the ball through the hoop. If you don't know how to shoot, then you will become a liability to the team.

Whether you are an expert shooter or just an average shooter, it doesn't matter because it is hard to imagine a basketball player who doesn't know how to shoot. You must understand that during the game there will come a time when you will be left open to shoot so you must take the chance and take the shot. If you don't know how to shoot the ball, then you are not only wasting time but you are also wasting the score you could've earned.

Shooting is not merely throwing a ball into the ring. In fact, there are different types of shooting skills that one must learn and eventually master. Learning these skills will help you score in different situations.

3. Passing. This is another way to keep the ball moving. There are times when dribbling is nearly impossible so your next resort is to pass the ball. Passing is the quickest way to get the ball to an open player which then allows him to take the shot.

Plays are created by passing. Without excellent passing skills, it would be hard to move the ball around. There are three types of passing skills namely the chest pass, bounce pass and overhead pass. To be able to play successfully, one must master or at least learn these skills.

4. Rebounding. This is an important skill because this allows your team to have a second chance at the ball especially when a shot is missed. To be successful at rebounding, you must learn how to position yourself in prime areas as well as anticipate your shots. Remember that not all the shots that your teammate will take will end up inside the ring. There are times when he will miss so it is important that you are always ready to recover the ball.

5. Defense. We have always heard of coaches telling their players that the best offense is a good defense. Indeed, if you are able to defend well, then you will surely reduce the chances of your opponents scoring.

When you are on the defensive side, it is your goal to keep the other team from scoring because if not, your team will most likely end up losing the game. There are different types of defensive techniques such as the man to man defense, zone defense and even blocking the shot.

6. Offense. Basketball is about taking turns. For you to be able to win a game, you must also have a good offense. Most of the time when we hear of the word offense, we immediately think about shooting and scoring which is true. Once the ball is on your team all that is left is for you to execute an offensive play that allows your team to score.
