Basketball is such a famous sport that has many boys, young men and women fantasizing about being famous and being on a winning team like one on the NBA or WNBA. Of course, this isn't something that can happen overnight and it takes a lot of practice and experience in the game to climb the ladder of success in basketball. To become a pro, you first must understand what the game is all about. The only way to understand it is to play it. Here are the things that you need to be able to play a proper basketball game to get you started. • A team – The first thing you need to do is get a team together. The minimum you need to start a game is 5 for your team and 5 on another. Once you get people who share the same interest together, you can then divide them into the two teams who will play the game. Pick a team captain for each team and then you can start planning out strategies and learning how different plays are executed. • A court – Of course, the most important thing that you need is a place to play. In the US, it's impossible to not find a basketball court, indoor or outdoor. This sport is so popular that almost all the youth are into it. In fact, you might actually be hard-pressed to find a vacant basketball court so that you can play your game with your friends. Find a court that has a basket on both sides about 10 to 12 feet high. Then decide whose team will shoot in what basket. • A ball – Next, you need a right-sized ball. The ball should be something that most of the players in the two teams should be able to handle well. Since you will most likely be in the same age group in your game, make sure that you get a suitable ball that is neither too heavy nor too big to handle on the court. You will most likely be safe by using a normal 29 inch circumference ball; this is pretty much the standard size ball that is used on the court, professional or not. But if you are all quite young, then get a smaller sized ball, perhaps a size 6 will do. • A referee – Aside from the people playing, you will need someone who understands the game and how it is played. Choose someone who can referee the whole game so that no cheap shots are thrown at players. This person will also be in charge of keeping the game fair. In an amateur court, the referee can also be the person who keeps score. • Gear – You can't play in trousers and jackets so make sure that everyone understands that at the very least, a t-shirt, shorts and proper basketball shoes should be used to play the game. This will keep the game fast-paced and proper shoes will prevent people from getting hurt. |
