Have you ever wondered why some basketball teams are better than others? Have you ever seen someone who has had more heart in the game than anyone else on the court? Well, the reason for this is that they have something that other teams or players don't. Here are factors that you can brush up on to make you a better player or a better coach. • The Mental – Basketball is more than just being bigger, better, and pushing others out of the way while trying to get a ball into a basket. This is also a mind game. And being a mind game, you must also be mentally prepared at all times to counter any strategies that are thrown towards you or your team. It is therefore important as a player or a coach to have a very clear understanding of the game. Read through the rules inside and out. Develop your own strategies that will help you out on the court. Gain good knowledge on the game and on players from the other teams that you will be facing on the court. Mental preparation is very important and this means that you must be at the top of your health at all times. As a coach, you can teach your team to perfect all your offensive and defensive strategies, having the team play them like it's their second nature. There are also some coaches who train their teams to visualize everything that is played out on the court before an actual play happens. By developing this kind of foresight, you are one step closer to winning a basketball game more than just 50% of the time. • The Physical – Of course, first and foremost, basketball is a very physical game. Expect to be bumped, to be pushed, and to be hurt in the process. You should also expect to run around for the entire time that you are on the court. This means that one has to be physically fit and prepared for any challenge on the court. Exercise and a good diet is the key here. At the same time, practicing the game will help the body learn the different moves and so it will naturally react to the many situations it faces. Also, aside from height being an advantage, it needs to be complimented with strength, speed and stamina. With these “tools,” a basketball player can face anything on the court physically and he or she can be formidable with a healthy mental game as well. • The Psychological – Again, basketball is a mind game. And aside from the physical game that plays on the court, there is another one that plays between the players. This is the emotional game. Players can affect others by getting to them emotionally. A basketball player needs to be prepared to counter this strategy as well. Otherwise, it can ruin their concentration and therefore ruin the whole game for the team as well. A coach also needs to understand that when a player is psychologically attacked, the player must be subbed out to cool off before getting into the game again. |
