Five Ways To Make It On The Basketball Team

You might be a guy trying to make it on your school varsity team; or you might actually be aiming for something higher by joining your University team and eventually to represent your state. Whatever your reason is, basketball is just as serious as any business there is out there. It's one of the most popular sports in the world and it's gaining even more attention in countries where basketball is unheard of. These are a couple more reasons why you might want to join. But just how will you make it on the team?

Trying out – The first thing you can do is try out for the team of your choice. This is the most crucial thing and it doesn't stop with just one visit. Trying out for the team means proving to the coach and your potential team mates that you are cut out to join them. This means that you have to show up early. You have to exercise more than everyone else does. You have to push yourself to play better than everyone else. And most important of all, you have to make the coach believe that you want this more than anything.

Watch the others – Want to be a good basketball player? To make it on the team, you have to play as part of the team. The only way to perform at your very best is to observe how other players play and to know what position will be your strength. Once you find out what you are good at, watch the others and learn from their moves because that can be a key to improving your own skills. Knowing how they play will strengthen your position as a part of the team and the coach will definitely notice this as you continue trying out.

Show the coach – Making it on the team is all up to the coach. Therefore, remember that you are there not to impress anybody else but the coach. By showing him or her that you are cut out for the team, that you have skills that the team can benefit from and that you are a good team player, the coach will really have no choice but to give you that position you have always wanted.

Get to know the coach – It's important that you communicate with the coach and also learn from everything that he or she teaches. Make sure that you are on the same page when it comes to basketball and do not be afraid to make your own suggestions either. After all, if you can't argue with your coach, then there is no real teamwork going on in the first place. Getting to know your coach will soften the blow of any conflicts that might occur on the court and its key that you talk to him or her as soon as you can – during and beyond practice.

Show no fear – Nobody likes a wimp especially when it comes to basketball. Sure, you can be the nice guy but you will have to toughen up as well so that all your potential teammates will believe in your contribution to the game. If you stumble, make sure you get up. The key here is to practice, practice and practice. Once you are done with that, practice some more.
